The 9-Month Fast Forward Update

It's been a long time since I've been on here. It's now 3 in the morning. I can't sleep. I've done a significant amount of blogstalking and suddenly I wanted to blog. I've been getting the urge the past several weeks to start keeping a journal again, and I guess this is how I'm going to do it.

So, I've been home from the mission for just about 9 months and this is me now:
Life for the past nine months has been a crazy never-ending rollercoaster, full of ups and downs and it isn't stopping any time soon. I'll speed through fall and winter but here were some of the highlights:

  • Came home Nov. 4, 2010 in total shock. Everyone said I was quiet.
  • Worked at my dad's restaurant, the RiverWalk, for November and December. Everyone in St. George needs to eat there. (Also, click the link.)
  • Thanksgiving in Carson City.
  • Christmas in STG with family. Finally saw some best friends after 2+ years.
  • Drove my life up to Provo on New Year's Eve.
  • Moving into my new apartment was an adventure: dried blood on the mattress, black mold on the windowsill, Mom having a heart attack. My roommates liked to wrestle and blow things up. There was also a dead animal's skull sitting adorning our TV. Not really my aesthetic...
  • After a few days, my family left and I was really back at BYU.
  • Winter Semester 2011: unaffectionately termed the Black Hole Semester. I've tried really hard to block most of it from my memory. Post-mission adjustment was less than ideal. I got through it.
Fast forward to the end of April. After a difficult semester, I peaced out of my living situation and took one of my old MTC teachers up on his offer to move into his apartment in this famous complex south of campus:
Moving to King Henry turned out to be the best decision I could have possibly made. Thanks to Shawn's invitation, I've stumbled into a situation with the best roommates I could ask for, an amazing ward and too many incredible people and experiences to even begin to count. I can't say enough good things about the friends I've made here. Good thing I'm staying for fall/winter...
I feel like I'm finally having a real dream college experience, and believe it or not, I may even be turning into a bit of a zoobie! (But shhh!, don't tell anyone...)

I also took classes spring term and, as opposed to the Black Hole of Winter, it was a great experience. After exploring/agonizing over multiple options, I've managed to find my perfect major!

Public Relations

I started out at BYU thinking I wanted to go into print journalism, but eventually the thought of having to simply report stories didn't exactly sound like my cup of tea. Nearly four years later, I realized I was looking in the right general area, but not completely on the right track. During spring term, I took two classes: Intro to Public Relations and Media Writing, and quickly discovered I'd found my niche.

Amid learning about the basics of campaign implementation, advocating for your client, using social media, issue and crisis management, reputation management, investor relations, news reporting, writing press releases and a million other things, I also had the opportunity during spring to work for
as an account coordinator for two clients. Doing Bradley felt a bit like jumping headfirst into the deep end of the pool only knowing how to doggy-paddle! But it turned out to be a huge learning experience and I got my first real taste of working in public relations. Even though it was my toughest semester academically so far, I earned the best grades I've gotten at BYU and I am so excited to apply to the program in a few short weeks.

Summer is all-too-quickly drawing to a close, but I'm doing my best to cherish every moment of the next few weeks. Life is great. I really couldn't be happier.

And now you're caught up. Pretty much.
